Fishing for Lake Trout and Salmon in Munising, Michigan

Munising, Michigan, on the southern shore of Lake Superior, is a prime destination for anglers targeting lake trout and salmon. Known for its clear waters and productive fisheries, the area provides excellent opportunities to fish using jigging and trolling techniques.

Fishing in Munising combines access to productive fisheries with a scenic setting. The backdrop of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the quiet waters of Munising Bay make this a standout location for anglers.

Here’s what to expect when fishing this part of the Great Lakes.

March – June: Spring Nearshore Fishing

As soon as the ice clears, the nearshore waters around Munising become productive for lake trout, salmon, and splake. During this time, cooler water temperatures concentrate fish in shallow areas, making them accessible with both jigging and trolling techniques.

Jigging involves dropping lures like spoons or soft plastics near the bottom and working them to attract strikes. Trolling allows us to cover more water, targeting fish as they follow bait schools near shore. This season offers consistent action and a great opportunity to target multiple species in one outing.

July – September: Summer Deep-Water Lake Trout

During the summer months, lake trout move to deeper water as temperatures rise. From July through September, we focus on trolling to reach these fish, using downriggers and dipsy divers to get lures into the strike zone.

Lake trout in this area average 5-15 pounds, with larger fish sometimes exceeding 20 pounds. Summer fishing in Munising provides steady opportunities to target these fish, making it the most active part of the season.

Jigging and Trolling: Two Key Techniques

We rely on two proven methods for targeting lake trout and salmon in Munising:

Jigging: Especially effective in spring, jigging involves precise movements with spoons or soft plastics to attract fish holding near the bottom.

Trolling: Used primarily in the summer, trolling covers large areas of water and targets fish at various depths. Spoons, flashers, and crankbaits are commonly used to mimic baitfish.

Combine Your Trip with Other Adventures

Munising’s central location on Lake Superior makes it an excellent starting point for broader Great Lakes adventures. Consider extending your trip to explore other fishing and sightseeing opportunities at destinations like Isle Royale, the Apostle Islands, or Door County.
