Ice Fishing Near The Apostle Islands
Nearshore ice fishing around the Apostle Islands is all about diversity. Anglers can target lake trout, brown trout, splake, and even coho salmon. But that’s not all—burbot, herring, whitefish, and the occasional northern pike also make appearances, adding plenty of action to the day. Using a mix of jigging and tip-ups, anglers can test their skills against aggressive trout while still having a chance to land other species lurking under the ice. The relatively shallow waters near the islands often concentrate fish, making these trips a great option for those looking to experience the thrill of Lake Superior ice fishing.
Beyond the incredible fishing, the scenery is truly something to behold. The ice formations, cliffs, and snow-covered landscapes of the Apostle Islands create a backdrop that elevates every trip. Whether you’re a seasoned ice angler or new to the sport, this is a bucket-list destination that combines world-class fishing with the breathtaking beauty of Lake Superior in winter.
The nearshore environment also offers a more accessible and family-friendly experience compared to the offshore waters of the lake. With less travel time, safer ice conditions, and plenty of action, it’s a perfect choice for anglers of all skill levels, from seasoned pros to first-timers.
Targeting Brown Trout and Splake
Brown trout and splake are the stars of the nearshore fishery. These fish are known for their aggressive strikes, powerful fights, and beautiful colors. Here’s what you need to know about targeting these prized species:
Brown Trout: Brown trout tend to hang out in shallower water near rocky structures, points, and drop-offs. They’re opportunistic feeders, so they’ll strike a wide range of presentations. Their size and strength make them a favorite among anglers, with fish often ranging from 2 to 10 pounds.
Splake: A hybrid of brook trout and lake trout, splake are perfectly suited to Lake Superior’s cold, clear waters. They’re abundant in nearshore areas and are incredibly aggressive, making them a blast to catch. Splake are typically in the 2-5 pound range but can grow larger.
Other Species We Catch
While brown trout and splake are the main targets while ice fishing near Apostle Islands, they’re far from the only fish biting in the nearshore waters. Here’s a quick rundown of some other species you might encounter:
Coho Salmon: These fast and feisty fish are a bonus catch and often put up a thrilling fight.
Burbot: Also known as freshwater cod, burbot are a unique catch and make for excellent table fare.
Lake Herring: These smaller fish are a blast to catch on light tackle and are a favorite among anglers targeting numbers.
Whitefish: Known for their delicate flavor, whitefish are a prized catch for anglers looking to bring home a meal.
Lake Trout: While more common offshore, lake trout do venture into nearshore waters and are always a welcome surprise.
How We Fish: Jigging and Tip-Ups
Our nearshore ice fishing trips focus on two main techniques: jigging and tip-ups.
Jigging: This active fishing method is perfect for targeting aggressive fish like splake, brown trout, and coho salmon. Using a mix of jigging spoons, tube jigs, and soft plastics, we mimic the movements of baitfish to entice strikes. Watching a fish charge your lure on sonar and feeling that hard hit is what makes jigging so addicting.
Tip-Ups: For anglers who enjoy a more laid-back approach, tip-ups are the way to go. We set these rigs with live bait, like minnows or smelt, and position them near likely fish-holding areas. The sight of a tip-up flag shooting up is pure excitement, and the suspense of not knowing what’s on the line adds to the fun.
Best Time To Ice Fish The Apostle Islands
The nearshore ice fishing season on Lake Superior typically begins in mid-December and runs through early April.
Early Ice (December-January): As the first ice forms, brown trout and splake move into shallow waters to feed. This is a prime time for aggressive bites and fast action.
Mid-Winter (February): The season’s peak sees stable ice conditions and consistent fishing. This is the best time to target a wide range of species, as fish settle into predictable patterns.
Late Ice (March-April): As the ice season winds down, fish become more active again, often feeding heavily in preparation for the spring thaw.
