Lake Superior Shipwreck Tours

Explore Lake Superior’s Hidden History: Guided Shipwreck Tours

Lake Superior, often called the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes,” holds a fascinating and mysterious past beneath its surface. With over 350 documented shipwrecks, this vast freshwater sea is a treasure trove for history buffs, adventure seekers, and anyone curious about the stories hidden beneath the waves.

Our guided boat tours offer an incredible opportunity to explore some of these legendary shipwrecks, focusing on areas around the Apostle Islands and other notable locations in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Thanks to state-of-the-art Livescope, sidescan sonar, and underwater camera technology, you don’t need to be a scuba diver to experience these submerged relics. You can view them in real-time from the comfort of our boat, making this a unique and unforgettable adventure for all ages.

Sunken Shipwreck History on Lake Superior

Lake Superior’s shipwrecks are more than just artifacts—they’re time capsules that tell the stories of the sailors, merchants, and explorers who braved the lake’s unpredictable waters. Many of these wrecks are astonishingly well-preserved due to Lake Superior’s cold, freshwater environment.

For adventurers, it’s a chance to step into the past. For photographers, it’s an opportunity to capture dramatic visuals both above and below the water. And for families, it’s a fun, educational outing that blends history, technology, and scenic beauty.

Shipwreck Hotspots Around the Apostle Islands

The Apostle Islands are home to several notable shipwrecks, many of which lie in relatively shallow waters, making them perfect for exploration by boat.

The Sevona
This steel-hulled freighter met its fate near Sand Island in 1905. The wreck is partially visible in shallow water, and our advanced equipment brings its submerged sections to life on screen.

Lucerne
Resting off Long Island, this schooner sank in 1886 during a violent storm. Its story of perseverance and tragedy is a highlight of our tours.

Noquebay
A wooden schooner barge that sank near Stockton Island in 1905. The wreck offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

The Fedora
Located near Michigan Island, this shipwreck offers fascinating details and a haunting reminder of Lake Superior’s power.

Other Notable Shipwreck Sites in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan

While the Apostle Islands are a central focus, other areas of Lake Superior also boast remarkable wrecks:

The SS America
One of the most famous wrecks in Isle Royale National Park, this passenger steamer sank in 1928. While it’s a popular scuba diving site, our equipment allows non-divers to experience its eerie beauty from the surface.

The Madeira
Located near Split Rock Lighthouse, this steel-hulled freighter tells a dramatic story of a storm that claimed it in 1905.

Manitou Island Shipwrecks
Close to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, the Manitou wrecks provide a window into the shipping history of the Upper Great Lakes.

Cutting-Edge Technology Brings the Past to Life

Our tours are enhanced by onboard Livescope, sidescan sonar, and underwater cameras, which allow us to locate and display shipwrecks in real-time. Here’s how it works:

Livescope Sonar
This forward-facing sonar creates live, high-resolution images of submerged objects, so you can see the wrecks as they appear beneath the boat.

Sidescan Sonar
This technology provides detailed images of shipwrecks lying on the lakebed, showcasing their structure and orientation.

Underwater Cameras
For an even closer look, we deploy cameras that provide live video feeds of the wrecks, giving you a diver’s perspective without getting wet.

These tools not only make the experience accessible to everyone but also enhance our ability to share the shipwrecks’ incredible details and stories.
