Lake Superior Lighthouse Tours

Guided Boat Tours to Explore Lake Superior’s Historic Lighthouses

Lake Superior’s coastline is rich in history, and its many lighthouses stand as reminders of the lake’s vital role in maritime navigation. Many of these historic structures are only accessible by water, making a guided boat tour one of the best ways to experience them up close. From the Apostle Islands in Northern Wisconsin to notable locations in Upper Michigan, these lighthouses offer a fascinating mix of history, scenery, and photo opportunities.

A boat tour isn’t just about seeing lighthouses—it’s about experiencing the unique stories behind each one. For photographers, the tours offer countless chances to capture the beauty of these landmarks set against the vast waters of Lake Superior.

Front Row (Boat) Seat to Remote Lighthouses

Lake Superior’s lighthouses are often located in remote areas that are impossible to access by car. A boat tour provides a front-row seat to these iconic structures and allows you to see them in the context of their natural surroundings.

For history lovers, the tours reveal the lives of the lighthouse keepers and the challenges they faced maintaining these beacons of safety. Photographers will appreciate the diverse angles and lighting conditions, creating unique opportunities to capture the beauty of both the lighthouses and the lake.

Highlights of Apostle Islands Lighthouses

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is home to more historic lighthouses than any other U.S. National Park. Here are a few of the most popular ones:

Raspberry Island Lighthouse
This restored lighthouse is often called the “Showplace of the Apostles.” Its classic design and beautiful setting make it a favorite stop on any tour.

Devils Island Lighthouse
Known for its dramatic surroundings, including sea caves and rocky cliffs, this lighthouse offers striking views and is a highlight for photographers.

Outer Island Lighthouse
Located on the most remote Apostle Island, this lighthouse is a great example of resilience, standing tall despite the harsh conditions of Lake Superior.

Sand Island Lighthouse
Built from brownstone, this charming lighthouse is especially scenic and offers a peaceful stop on any lighthouse tour.

Other Must-See Lighthouses on Lake Superior

Beyond the Apostle Islands, other lighthouses in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan are worth exploring:

Chequamegon Point Lighthouse
Close to Ashland, Wisconsin, this lesser-known lighthouse is a hidden gem for visitors looking to avoid crowds.

Big Bay Point Lighthouse
Located in Upper Michigan, this lighthouse doubles as a bed and breakfast and offers stunning views of Lake Superior.

Ontonagon Lighthouse
Situated at the mouth of the Ontonagon River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, this lighthouse combines historical significance with an easily accessible location.

What Makes These Tours Perfect for Photographers?

Lake Superior’s lighthouses are a great subject for photography, thanks to their dramatic settings and unique architecture.

Scenic Backdrops
The lighthouses are surrounded by cliffs, forests, or wide-open water, making every angle worth capturing.

Changing Light and Weather
The lake’s dynamic weather and lighting conditions provide plenty of opportunities to take memorable photos.

Water-Level Perspectives
Seeing the lighthouses from the water lets you capture views that aren’t possible from land.
