Ice Fishing Northern Wisconsin’s Inland Lakes: Family-Friendly Panfish Action

Panfish—like bluegill, crappie, and perch—are abundant in Northern Wisconsin’s lakes and tend to school up under the ice, making them easy to locate and target. They’re aggressive feeders, which means plenty of bites and fewer lulls in the action, especially when fishing with an experienced guide. For kids or anyone new to ice fishing, the thrill of catching fish after fish is what makes these trips so much fun.

And let’s not forget the culinary bonus: panfish are some of the best-tasting freshwater fish around! With flaky, mild meat, they’re perfect for a classic fish fry after a day on the ice.

Jigging and Tip-Ups: A Winning Combo

When targeting panfish, we focus on two tried-and-true techniques: jigging and tip-ups.

Jigging for Panfish: Jigging is an active fishing method that’s simple and effective. Using small jigs tipped with waxworms or spikes, we mimic the movements of tiny aquatic insects and baitfish to entice bites. Watching the action on a flasher or sonar adds an exciting layer to the experience, as you can see fish moving in to strike. Jigging rods are light and easy to handle, making this technique especially fun for kids.

Tip-Ups for Panfish: For a more laid-back approach, tip-ups are an excellent option. These simple setups are placed over productive spots and baited with live minnows. When a flag pops up, it’s a race to see who can reach it first! While jigging typically produces more action, tip-ups are a great way to mix things up and provide consistent opportunities for everyone.

Family-Friendly Fun on the Ice

Ice fishing for panfish on Northern Wisconsin’s inland lakes is as family-friendly as it gets. The gear is lightweight, the fish are eager to bite, and the action keeps everyone engaged. Even young kids can join in the fun with jigging rods tailored to their size or by helping check tip-ups when the flags fly.

The best part? You don’t need to be an experienced angler to have a blast. Our guides handle everything, from finding the fish to setting up gear and drilling holes. We’ll make sure everyone stays warm and comfortable, with a heated shelter on hand to provide a break from the elements.

For those new to ice fishing, targeting panfish is the perfect introduction. These fish are forgiving and plentiful, meaning you’ll spend less time waiting and more time reeling in your catch. Along the way, you’ll pick up tips and tricks from our experienced guides, learning the basics of jigging, using electronics, and understanding fish behavior under the ice.

When and Where We Fish

The ice fishing season for panfish begins in mid-December as the lakes freeze over and runs through late March. Early ice is often the most productive, as panfish are eager to feed in shallow bays and weed beds. As winter progresses, they move into slightly deeper water, where they remain active and accessible.

Northern Wisconsin’s inland lakes are packed with prime panfish spots, and our guides know them like the back of their hand. From small hidden gems to larger lakes with established fisheries, we’ll take you to the best locations for a day filled with action.
